Artificial intelligence is changing how almost every industry works, and media is changing faster than most. Tools that can draft a script, suggest edits, generate images or clean up audio are now part of everyday creative work. For women in India who are starting or restarting a career, learning to use these tools well can be a real advantage.
This beginner’s guide explains which AI skills are genuinely useful, how they connect to paid work in media, and how you can learn them through the Karuna Media Master Program.
What “AI skills” actually means for a beginner
You do not need to be a programmer or a maths expert to work with AI. For most creative and media jobs, AI skills mean knowing how to use AI tools to do real work faster and better, while keeping your own judgement in charge.
In practice, that includes:
- Writing clear prompts so a tool understands what you want.
- Using AI for ideas and research, such as brainstorming story angles or outlining a script.
- Creating and editing visuals with image-generation and design tools.
- Speeding up video and audio work, for example automatic captions, noise reduction or rough cuts.
- Checking and correcting AI output, because these tools can make mistakes and invent facts.
That last point is the most important. Employers value people who can use AI and also spot when it is wrong.
Why AI skills matter for women’s careers
More output with fewer resources
Many small businesses, NGOs and creators cannot afford a large team. Someone who can write, design and edit with the help of AI tools can deliver work that once needed several people. That makes you useful to employers and to freelance clients.
Flexible and remote-friendly work
A lot of AI-assisted media work, such as social media content, captioning, thumbnail design and short-video editing, can be done from a laptop. That flexibility can help women balance work with family responsibilities.
A fresh start that does not depend on your past marks
AI tools are new for everyone. A school dropout who practises every day can become more skilled than a graduate who never tries them. What counts is your portfolio and your ability to deliver.
Core AI skills to learn first
1. Prompting and AI ideation
Learn to give tools like ChatGPT clear instructions: who the audience is, what format you need, and what tone to use. Practise asking for outlines, headlines, interview questions and storyboards, then improve the results yourself.
2. AI-assisted visual design
Image-generation tools such as Midjourney can help you create concept art, mood boards and storyboard frames. Pair them with basic design principles such as colour, layout and readable text, so the final result looks professional.
3. AI in video editing
Modern editing software includes AI features for transcription, auto-reframing for vertical video, colour matching and object removal. Learning a professional editor such as DaVinci Resolve, and its smart features, is one of the most employable combinations you can build.
4. AI in audio and podcasting
AI can reduce background noise, level voices and generate transcripts. Combined with good recording technique, this lets you produce clean podcasts and voice-overs.
5. Content strategy and digital marketing
Knowing how to plan a content calendar, write captions, read basic analytics and adapt content for different platforms turns your creative skills into business results.
6. Responsible and ethical use
Learn to check facts, respect copyright, avoid creating misleading images of real people, and be open with clients about how you used AI. These habits protect your reputation.
Jobs where AI and media skills come together
Here are some entry-level roles where AI-assisted media skills are useful:
- AI content creator for brands, channels or agencies.
- Social media executive handling posts, reels and captions.
- Video editor for short-form and long-form content.
- Motion graphics or VFX assistant.
- Podcast producer or audio editor.
- Research and scripting assistant for production teams.
Pay varies widely by city, employer and skill level. The Karuna Media Master Program page lists starting career outcomes of roughly ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 a month for its learners.
How to learn AI skills with KMMP
The Karuna Media Master Program, run by Puppets Picture Education Trust in Noida, is a job-focused media programme that integrates AI throughout the curriculum rather than treating it as a separate topic.
AI Content Creation as a specialisation
AI Content Creation is one of the programme’s specialisation modules, offered alongside filmmaking, cinematography, audio engineering, VFX and video editing. The programme’s curriculum includes AI ideation with tools such as Midjourney and ChatGPT, used alongside storytelling, production and post-production.
A full year of structured practice
The full KMMP runs for 12 months and around 720 hours: nine months of core learning with daily theory and studio practice, followed by three months of career development with masterclasses, interviews and an industry launch. You can see the facilities, including the AI Hub, on the Infrastructure page.
Built for women from low-income families
The programme is open to women aged 16 and above from low-income households, with no minimum educational qualification. A “Study + Earn” model is designed to help learners begin earning while they study. Full eligibility details are on the Apply page.
Tips for building AI skills on your own
- Practise daily for 20 minutes. Small, regular practice beats occasional long sessions.
- Keep a prompt notebook of instructions that worked well.
- Create a mini portfolio of before-and-after examples showing how you improved AI output.
- Never publish AI output unchecked. Verify every fact, name and number.
- Learn the fundamentals too. AI makes a skilled editor faster; it does not replace knowing what good work looks like.
Help more women learn AI skills
Teaching AI and media skills needs computers, software, studio time and experienced mentors. Puppets Picture Education Trust supports KMMP through donors and CSR partners. If you would like to help a woman build a future-ready career, you can donate or sponsor a learner. The trust holds 12A, 80G and CSR-1 registrations.
