Every business, school, hospital and NGO in India now wants to be seen on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn. Someone has to plan those posts, make the Reels, reply to comments and work out what is working. That person is the social media manager, and it is one of the most accessible creative careers for women who are willing to learn and practise.
This guide explains what social media managers do, the skills employers look for, what a good social media manager course for women should cover, and how you can train through the Karuna Media Master Program in Noida.
What does a social media manager do?
The job changes from company to company, but most social media managers:
- plan a content calendar of posts, Reels, carousels and stories;
- create content themselves or coordinate designers, video editors and creators;
- write captions, hooks and replies in the brand’s voice;
- manage the community by answering comments and messages politely and quickly;
- track analytics such as reach, watch time, saves and shares, and report what they show;
- follow brand guidelines and advertising rules, including clear disclosure of paid partnerships;
- in some roles, help run basic paid promotions.
Where social media managers work
- Digital marketing agencies that handle several client brands at once.
- In-house teams at brands, startups, media companies and e-commerce sellers.
- NGOs, schools and hospitals that need to share their work with the public.
- Freelancing for local shops, salons, cafés, coaches and small businesses.
Job titles vary. You may see social media executive, content creator, community manager, digital marketing executive or short-form video editor. Early roles often combine several of these.
The skills you need
Content creation
Short-form video now sits at the centre of most social media plans. You should be comfortable shooting and editing simple Reels on a phone, taking clean photos and designing basic graphics in a tool such as Canva.
Writing
Captions, hooks, scripts and replies are all writing. Clear, friendly writing in English, and often in Hindi or another Indian language, is a real advantage.
Strategy and planning
Good social media managers do not post randomly. They decide on content pillars, the few themes an account keeps returning to, and understand who the audience is and how often to publish.
Analytics
You should be able to read a platform’s insights, spot which posts worked and why, and turn those numbers into decisions for next month.
Tools
Expect to use design tools, scheduling and analytics tools such as Metricool, the platforms’ own business dashboards, and AI writing assistants for first drafts.
Communication and reliability
Clients and managers value people who meet deadlines, explain results simply and stay calm when a post attracts criticism.
Do you need a degree?
Many employers care more about what you can show than what you studied. A portfolio with real accounts you have grown, Reels you have made and a short case study of your results can speak louder than a certificate. That is why practical training matters so much.
What a good social media manager course for women should cover
Before you join any course, free or paid, check that it includes:
- hands-on content creation, especially short-form video, not just theory;
- platform strategy for Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn;
- content calendars and analytics;
- design and personal branding;
- advertising rules and ethics;
- real projects that become portfolio pieces;
- interview and freelancing preparation.
How the Karuna Media Master Program prepares you
The Karuna Media Master Program (KMMP) is a 12-month, studio-led programme run by Puppets Picture Education Trust (PPET) for women from low-income families. It is broader than a social media manager course for women, but several parts of it map directly onto social media work.
Content strategy, social media and AI marketing
According to the programme page, Month 7 covers platform-specific strategy for YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and Spotify, algorithm behaviour, content pillars and audience personas, publishing cadence, analytics and monetisation. Practical work includes building a 30-day content calendar with Notion AI, creating five short-form clips from one long video with Opus Clip, setting up a Metricool analytics dashboard, filming and editing a social media Reel from scratch, and presenting a simulated brand pitch. The deliverable is a 30-day content strategy, five repurposed clips and a monetisation plan.
Design, video and photography
Earlier months build the skills a social media manager uses every day: photography and visual storytelling, graphic design and branding with Canva, including thumbnails and social media templates, and video editing in DaVinci Resolve.
Career preparation
In the career development phase, students attend masterclasses from industry professionals, including social media strategists, on topics such as the social media creator economy and freelancing and pricing. Month 11 includes role-specific mock interviews for content production and digital marketing roles, a LinkedIn profile workshop, and training on freelancing contracts and rate cards.
Who can apply
According to the Apply page, KMMP is open to women aged 16 and above from low-income families, with household income below about ₹20,000 a month in urban areas or ₹15,000 in rural areas. There is no minimum education requirement, and basic English helps but is not essential. The process includes an online application, shortlisting, an interview, verification and final selection.
