Audio Production and Podcasting Careers for Women in India

Durga

When people think of media careers, they usually picture someone behind a camera. But every film, advertisement, podcast, audiobook and online class also depends on someone who makes it sound right. Audio production is a skilled, creative field with room for many more women, and it is possible to learn it through structured, job-oriented training.

This guide explains what audio production and podcasting involve, which skills you need, the kinds of jobs available, and how women from low-income families can train through the Karuna Media Master Program in Noida.

What is audio production?

Audio production covers everything involved in recording, editing, mixing and delivering sound. That includes:

  • Recording voices, instruments and on-location sound.
  • Editing to remove mistakes, pauses and noise.
  • Sound design, such as creating or adding effects and atmosphere.
  • Foley, which means recording everyday sounds like footsteps or doors to match what happens on screen.
  • Mixing to balance dialogue, music and effects.
  • Mastering and delivery so the final file sounds good on phones, speakers and headphones.

Podcasting brings many of these skills together with planning, scripting, hosting and publishing.

Why audio is a strong career choice for women

Demand across many industries

Audio skills are needed in film and web series, advertising, radio, podcasts, e-learning, corporate communication, gaming and music. That means you are not limited to one type of employer.

A field where skill speaks for itself

In audio, your work is judged by how it sounds. A clean, well-mixed podcast or a professional voice-over sample can show your ability more clearly than a certificate.

Flexible ways to work

Many audio editing and podcast production tasks can be done from a laptop with good headphones, which makes freelance and part-time work possible alongside other responsibilities.

Key skills to learn

Microphone technique and recording

Learn how different microphones work, where to place them, how to set recording levels and how to manage a room so that echo and background noise do not ruin a recording.

Field and studio recording

Studio work and on-location recording need different approaches. A good course gives you practice in both, including multi-track recording.

Editing and cleanup

Learn to cut, arrange and clean audio in a digital audio workstation. Noise reduction, removing clicks and smoothing edits are everyday tasks.

Sound design, foley and scoring

These creative skills bring films and stories to life. Learning to build a soundscape, or even compose simple original music, makes your portfolio stand out.

Voice and presentation

If you want to host podcasts or record voice-overs, practise voice modulation, pacing and clear pronunciation. Confidence in front of a microphone is a skill that can be trained.

Podcast planning and publishing

Understand formats, episode structure, scripting, interview technique and how podcasts are distributed and promoted online.

AI tools for audio

AI-assisted tools can now help with transcripts, noise reduction and levelling. Knowing how and when to use them responsibly is becoming a standard expectation.

Jobs in audio production and podcasting

With training and a portfolio, you can explore roles such as:

  • Podcast producer or editor for brands, creators and media companies.
  • Sound recordist on film, documentary or event shoots.
  • Audio editor or dialogue editor in post-production.
  • Sound designer or foley artist.
  • Voice-over artist or podcast host.
  • Studio assistant at a recording or dubbing studio.
  • Audio engineer for e-learning and corporate content.

Pay depends on the role, employer, city and your experience. The Karuna Media Master Program page lists starting career outcomes of around ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 a month for its learners.

Learn audio production at KMMP

The Karuna Media Master Program (KMMP) is a job-focused programme run by Puppets Picture Education Trust in Noida for women from low-income backgrounds.

Audio Engineering specialisation

Audio Engineering is one of KMMP’s specialisation modules, offered alongside filmmaking, cinematography, VFX, video editing and AI content creation. The curriculum includes voice modulation and podcasting essentials, audio production and multi-track recording, field recording and studio workflows, and sound design, foley and original scoring. Milestone projects include a pilot podcast episode and a sound pack for the learner’s portfolio.

Studio facilities

Learners train in the trust’s studio spaces rather than only watching videos. You can see the facilities on the Infrastructure page.

Programme structure

The full KMMP runs for 12 months and around 720 hours: nine months of core learning with daily theory and studio practice, then three months of career development with masterclasses, interviews and an industry launch. A “Study + Earn” model is designed to help learners begin earning during the course.
