Every film, ad, music video and YouTube documentary you have watched was shaped by someone deciding where the camera goes, how the light falls and what the audience sees first. That person is the cinematographer, also called the director of photography (DOP or DP). It is a creative, technical and very hands-on career, and more women are moving into camera roles in India than ever before.
This guide explains what a cinematographer does, the skills you need, the usual career ladder in India, how to learn and build a portfolio, and practical tips for women starting out behind the camera.
What does a cinematographer do?
The cinematographer turns the director’s vision into images. On a typical project, the work includes:
- Reading the script and discussing the look and mood with the director.
- Planning shots: framing, lens choice, camera movement and angles.
- Designing the lighting for each scene, indoors and outdoors.
- Choosing cameras, lenses, lights and grip equipment for the budget.
- Leading the camera and lighting team on set.
- Working with the editor and colourist so the final image matches the plan.
On small shoots, such as a corporate video or a short documentary, the cinematographer may also operate the camera, set the lights and record sound. On bigger sets, there is a full team.
Key skills you need
Visual storytelling
Cinematography is storytelling with images. You need to understand composition, the rule of thirds, leading lines, shot sizes (wide, medium, close-up) and how each choice makes the audience feel.
Camera and lens knowledge
Learn the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO), frame rates, white balance, focus and how focal length changes the look of a face or a room. You do not need to own an expensive camera to learn these; a smartphone with manual controls is a good start.
Lighting
Lighting is where cinematographers stand out. Learn three-point lighting, how to use daylight from a window, bounce boards, diffusion and practical lights in a scene. Watch how light changes through the day.
Colour and post-production basics
Understanding colour grading and editing makes you a better shooter, because you learn what the edit needs. Tools such as DaVinci Resolve are widely used for grading.
Teamwork and communication
A camera department works under pressure. Clear communication, calm problem-solving and respect for every crew member matter as much as technical skill.
The cinematography career ladder in India
Most cinematographers do not start as DOPs. A common path looks like this:
- Camera intern or trainee: carrying equipment, learning the gear and watching how a set works.
- Camera attendant or second assistant camera (2nd AC): preparing batteries, cards and lenses, and keeping camera reports.
- First assistant camera (1st AC) or focus puller: keeping shots in focus, a highly skilled job in its own right.
- Camera operator: physically operating the camera during takes.
- Cinematographer or DOP: leading the visual approach of a project.
Many people also build careers shooting for YouTube channels, brands, weddings, events, news and documentaries. These projects pay the bills and build a showreel at the same time.
How to learn cinematography
Formal courses
Film schools such as FTII in Pune and SRFTI in Kolkata offer specialised cinematography courses with competitive entrance exams. Private institutes and university mass communication programmes also teach camera and lighting. Before joining any course, check how much hands-on camera time students get, what equipment they use and whether there is placement support.
Practical, project-based training
Cinematography is learned by shooting. Look for training where you spend real hours on professional cameras, light real scenes and work in crews. Short films, documentaries and music videos made during training become your first portfolio pieces.
Self-practice
- Shoot one short scene every week on your phone with manual settings.
- Recreate a shot from a film you love and compare the lighting.
- Study behind-the-scenes videos to see how sets are lit.
- Practise focus and smooth movement without a gimbal.
Building your cinematography portfolio
Employers and directors hire cinematographers based on what they can see. Build:
- A showreel of 60 to 90 seconds with your strongest shots first. Our guide on becoming a video editor covers editing skills that help here.
- Two or three complete short pieces, such as a short film, a documentary or a brand video.
- Stills or frame grabs that show your lighting and composition.
- A simple online profile with your contact details and the roles you played on each project.
Always credit the director and crew, and only include work you actually shot.
Tips for women starting out behind the camera
Camera departments in India have long been male-dominated, and women entering the field often talk about having to prove themselves on technical skill. These steps can help:
- Know your gear thoroughly. Confidence with equipment earns respect quickly on set.
- Find mentors and peers. Join women filmmaker communities, workshops and festival networks.
- Look after your safety. Share call sheets with someone you trust, ask about travel arrangements for late shoots and save the production contact.
- Get agreements in writing. Even a short email confirming dates, role and payment protects you.
- Build physical stamina. Long days and heavy kit are part of the job; good shoes and smart lifting technique help.
What can you earn?
Earnings vary widely by city, type of work and experience. Assistants and trainees usually start modestly, while established cinematographers working on ads, OTT or feature films can earn well per project. Freelancers are often paid per day or per project, so keep track of your rates and invoices from the beginning.
Train in cinematography with Karuna Media
Puppets Picture Education Trust (PPET) in Noida runs the 12-month Karuna Media Master Program for women from underprivileged homes. Cinematography is one of its specialisation modules, alongside filmmaking, video editing, audio and AI content creation. Students train on professional Canon and Blackmagic cameras, practise lighting setups and blocking, work in crew roles on a capstone film and receive placement support at the end.
